Ten years ago Viruskenner started as a pilot at one Dutch primary school, ‘De Triangel’. Ten years later Viruskenner is active in Suriname, Indonesia, Italy, The Netherlands and still has the great pleasure to work with the school where it all began.

Klimaatverandering brengt tropische infectieziekten naar Europa Bron: NOS.nl Tropische infectieziekten komen mede door klimaatverandering ook in regio’s met een milder klimaat, en dus in Europese landen, steeds vaker voor. Het gaat om ziekten als knokkelkoorts, chikungunya, zandmugziekte en hersenontsteking, die allemaal door muggen en teken verspreid worden.

The last months participants have been busy with the project, worldwide. They gained knowledge and awareness about viruses and then – the most important part – created in teams prevention tools to spread their knowledge. Creativity, societal impact and content are the three important pillars.

This year, April is ‘the month’ of Viruskenner final days. Last week were the final days in Suriname and Italy. It’s always a joy to visit Arthur A. Hoogendoorn Lyceum: the teachers, the students and the inspiring school as you can see through the pictures!

Final day Viruskenner Italy

Friday the 5th of April it was time for the finale of Viruskenner at Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Buonarroti-Pozzo in Trento, Italy. It was the very first Italian edition and an impressive one! As in The Netherlands, Suriname and Indonesia, the participants gathered knowledge about viruses and transmission routes and after that they created tools to spread their knowledge.

Afgelopen week waren Viruskenner-coaches op bezoek op basisschool De Triangel in Amstelveen. De klassen zijn al goed op weg. Ze lieten zien hoe ver ze nu zijn met hun ideeën voor preventiemateriaal, dat belooft wat! Te gek om alle goede vragen te mogen beantwoorden en de eerste ideeën te zien en te horen.

Today Viruskenner kicked off at primary school ‘De Triangel’ in the Netherlands! The participants got SOA-classes and all the ins and outs about viruses and transmission routes. A special note: ‘De Triangel’ was the very first school that participated in the project!

Viruskenner coach Rory de Vries (virologist) wins prize

Viruskenner is very proud of Viruskenner coach Rory de Vries! He was awarded the Dutch Beijerinck prize for virology: “The Beijerinck prize promotes virology-oriented science. This prize is given out in commemoration of Martinus Willem Beijerinck, the “father of virology”, who discovered pathogens smaller than bacteria and named these viruses, after the Latin world for poison.

Kick-offs in Suriname!

A flying start for Viruskenner at primary and secondary schools in Suriname this week! During the kick-off the participants got all the ins and outs about the project, viruses and transmission routes and existing communication tools. Now they are going to work in teams and gain more knowledge about one virus.

Great masterclass in Rotterdam!

Still thrilled by the live masterclass in Erasmus Medical Centre last week on 17 January in Rotterdam! During the masterclass Dutch participants from high schools get classes from young doctors and researchers about their study, viruses, transmission routes, but also about societal impact and existing public health communication.

The first Italian kick-off

Viruskenner @ ITT Buonarroti Pozzo Viruskenner has kicked off its first Italian edition at ITT Buonarroti Pozzo in Trento! It was a great welcome with the involved teachers and good questions from the participants. What happens during a live Viruskenner kick-off at schools?During the start the students and teachers are being prepared for the project.

Masterclass Viruskenner | Technasium

Masterclass voor deelnemers Viruskenner | Technasium editie Op 17 januari 2019 (13.00 – 15.30 uur) organiseert Viruskenner een masterclass voor leerlingen die meedoen aan de Technasium editie. Ze zijn welkom in het Erasmus MC om kennis te maken met jonge artsen en onderzoekers in opleiding die zullen vertellen over hun werk en hun studie.

Viruskenner goes to Italy! In the previous editions Viruskenner has been active in four countries: Surinam, Indonesia, Senegal and The Netherlands. This year Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Buonarroti-Pozzo in Trento, Italy will also join the project. We are very much looking forward to working together in the Viruskenner project and a great Italian edition!

De jury was onder de indruk van de sterke inhoudelijke presentatie van het Markland College, dat onderzoek had gedaan naar het Chikungunyavirus.
